Long time since update

I normally update this blog from phone but have been unable to lately as the app is not working properly. I am adding this super quick update to inform everyone. Shop has been crazy busy and the woodshow was a couple weeks ago. I will have to try and get app working again so I can post pics easier and keep updating more frequently.

Shop Update

Still really busy in the woodshop. I have 2 upcoming refinishing classes coming up as well. One class is Oct 22-23 and the other is Nov 5-6. So here is where I am at with everything going on:
Wife's hockey wreath is done and hanging

Wood countertop ready for delivery!

Crokinole board top is being finished...
Crokinole table base received 3rd coat of finish

End grain cutting boards glued up. The small pieces in the bottom right are for a small footstool repair.

More end grain cutting boards glued up and ready for flattening

Next up is a Cabin Bed for a client and then I need to make room in the shop by working on some furniture flips that I picked up this summer.

Shop update

Really busy with lots of stuff on the go and will have to start thinking about a cutoff date for xmas soon....

My wife wants me to make this for her soon so I better factor that into the schedule as well

Hand works 2017 was announced.  Again the event takes place in Amana, Iowa and I would love to go this time. Woodworking in America kicks off today in Cincinnati, Ohio and that is a show on my bucket list as well. So my bucket list of shows is: IWF Atlanta, Woodworking in America, Handworks and the AWFS Fair. There maybe some I forgot or even don't know about but that's a good list to start with.

Wall clock repair

Wall clock repair... Clock was dropped during a move. I repaired the damage and touched up all the vintage character marks (dings and scratches). Gave it a good cleaning, oiled the mechanics and conditioned the wood. Clock looks like new again!

Russian orthodox crosses part 3

Another set of crosses for a client, this marks the third set now. The white oak is dimensioned and planed smooth. Next I layout the perpendicular half lap joints and the angled half lap. Cut with a dovetail saw and clear out the waste on the table saw with a cross cut sled. Now dial in the fit by paring down with a chisel. Glue in the angled joint first. Now I can cut the ends of the small piece parallel to the main body with the cross cut sled on the table saw. Glue up the final two joints and let set. Now sand/ plane the joints flush. Using a sharp chisel I now chamfer the edges and do an inside mitered chamfer for all bisecting pieces. After that do some touch up sanding if need be and because these are requested as unfinished these crosses are done!

Update

Potatoe and onion bin was picked up today and the client loved it. The client has some more work he needs done too. Had a successful class this morning on how to tune up a hand plane. Got another order for a pair of Russian orthodox crosses. Got the log slices all prepped for the cupcake stand.

Potatoe bin update

Bin is complete and will be picked up this weekend. I want to take a better photo of the finished product before that. I now have a hand plane to tune up for a friend of a friend then on to the restoration of a crokinole table, log slice cupcake stand and hopefully finish some ongoing small pieces so I can get them up for sale.

Back to blogging

Been posting on my Facebook page "Furniture by Kevin" and on Instagram "furniturebykevin" so much lately that I haven't been blogging. I'm going to get back to it as I find it helps me stay organized and I have clients who are not on Facebook or Instagram and want them to be able to follow their projects.

So the shop is very busy right now with furniture flips and client work. Just about done another potatoe and onion bin, have a crokinole table refurbish up next and putting specific woodworking classes together for the fall. Classes will be "furniture refinishing" and "basic upholstery."

Hoping to get a few videos going as well. I also need to start ramping up for the 11th annual Niagara Woodworking Show.

Woodworking classes

This is a pic of one of the end grain cutting boards my student made from a recent woodworking class. It turned out really nice! Now I think she has caught the woodworking bug. :-)

Bye Bye website

I have dissolved my furniturebykevin website! I did not see enough activity on there to justify keeping the site alive. I need to take a course on website programming. I have not been that busy in the shop it seems but I have got a lot accomplished in the shop. I sold the 4 oak dining chairs, the 6 walnut dining chairs, got a great deal and acquired some rustic barn board. I have been building the 30" jointer plane and took my first shavings with it! I need to fine tune the aesthetics and add the handle to the plane yet. I was given another vintage hand plane and some other vintage tools which I will add to the collection. So I am hoping to put more content on here more often seeing how I removed my website.

Project updates

Some end grain cutting boards underway...

The oak is ready for the deacons bench.

Still have not decided on a design for the hall tree. I was also reminded that I still owe my wife a jewelry box too. :-)

Darryl, Mike and I will be embarking on building some wooden jointer planes starting this week as well.

Still have class time available for those interested. Learn everything from basics to a specific tool to let's build an entire project.
